The first year of life

A newborn baby can see, hear and feel. By the age of five, a child can talk, ride a bike and invent imaginary friends. How does this development happen? We don´t understand the way language, thinking and planning develop very well. Now scientists are using new technology to ´see´ into children´s brains. A study in 2010 showed that the experiences a child has in their first few years affect the development of the brain. It showed that children who received more attention often had higher IQs. The brain of a newborn baby has nearly a hundred billion neurons. This is the same number as an adult´s brain. Researchers also know that babies need to hear a lot of language in order to understand grammar rules. But there is a big difference between listening to television, audiobooks, or the internet and interacting with people. A comparative study of two groups of nine-month-old American babies suggests that social experience is essential to successful brain development in babies.

According to the third paragraph, we can conclude that:

a.
Social interaction is a crucial feature when babies acquire their language.
b.
Listening to television and audio books is a key strategy in language acquisition.
c.
Hearing a lot of language allows a child to learn grammar rules.
d.
Listening to more languages enhance a child to learn grammar rules easily.

TRAVEL IN THE US

Most teenagers in the United States drive their own cars. In this country, drivers are required to obtain a license from their state of residence. Most states permit 15-year-olds to apply for their driver´s license, but they must attend a driver´s educational program at their schools or at a professional driving school. During the program, people must pass a full medical examination and an eye test in addition to a certain number of hours of driving practice. As soon as they finish the program, they must pass a written test and a driving test. The written test has 200 questions and it covers the applicants´ knowledge of traffic signs, traffic regulations, basic mechanics, and first aids. The driving test is generally taken in a special area where applicants have to drive through a series of difficult obstacles on the road. For immigrants, it is obligatory to speak English very well in order to enroll in the driver´s educational program. They must have a passport or birth certificate as ID. In some states, the legal status of the immigrant is not an issue. In others, it is the first requirement for applications. Finally, the cost of the test is around US$$200 but it varies from state to state.

Read the text and answer the question:

How much TV do you watch lately?

Is it more than the time you spend watching videos on the internet or listening to podcasts? Some may say TV is no longer making an impact on their lives but is it really true? The TV is still a very popular way a lot of us get our entertainment at home. It offers us the chance to see top musical artists, great films and documentaries, and sometimes, thanks to important life events, it has the power to bring the whole country and all ages together in a way the Internet never could. Some people argue that the TV offers a poor quality of programmers on the many channels we now have. It is certainly true that many of the channels do nothing more than repeat old shows or offer cheap, low-quality programmers. However, I would argue that a lot of content on the Internet isn't particularly great. At least TV shows have professional people checking the quality of shows, which a lot of content on the web doesn't.I agree that it is easy to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Internet, even though much of it is not true or certainly can't be trusted. I enjoy sitting down to the news on TV in the evening, knowing that I am more likely to believe the information than the things I read online. Anybody can post information on the Internet and a lot of it is opinion rather than fact. So I don't think we should be so quick to say goodbye to the TV. In fact, I think it has many more years left in it.

According to the reading, What does the author thinks about TV?

a.
TV is still a great form of entertainment
b.
TV is no longer a way to comunicate or entertainment
c.
How most people prefer videos online rather than the TV
d.
persuade readers not to watch TV

Read the text and answer the question:

If you want a new computer or new clothes, what do you need to get them? Well, all you need is money. But when did people start using money? The history of money is quite interesting. Before money was invented, people used the barter system to get what they wanted. To barter means to trade goods or services for other goods or services. For example, someone could trade one horse for one cow. However, the barter system had several problems. People did not always agree on how much one thing was worth compared to another. There was also a problem called the “double coincidence of wants.” For example, what if a man wanted to trade his horse for a cow? He would have to find someone who had a cow, but needed a horse. The invention of money solved these kinds of problems. Some of the earliest forms of metal coins appeared in China around 1000 B.C. Silver coins started to be made in what is now Turkey around 600 B.C. Soon after, the techniques for making coins were copied and improved by the Greek and Roman empires. Later, paper money was developed and used in China around A.D. 800, during the Tang Dynasty. Coins were heavy and bulky, so carrying lots of money was not easy. Paper money solved this problem. Now, most countries use both paper and coin money. Furthermore, in this digital age, people can buy things without paper money by using a credit card. In the future, it is likely that an even more advanced form of money will be used.

What is NOT true about paper money?

a.
It was first made in Turkey and improved in Greece.
b.
It was created after the invention of coins.
c.
It made it possible for people to carry lots of money.
d.
Before the Tang Dynasty, people did not use paper money.
