According to the text answer the following question:

THE SHARING ECONOMY

If we look around us at the things we have purchased at some point in our lives, we would no doubt notice that not everything we own is being put to good use: the thick woolen coat which we thought looked trendy despite the fact that we live in a tropical country, the smartphone that got put away when we bought ourselves the newest model. Those underutilised items may seem useless to some but could be an asset to others. With the advent of the internet, online communities have figured out a way to generate profit from the sharing of those underused assets. Using websites and social media groups that facilitate the buying and selling of second-hand goods. And this is known as the sharing economy. This move towards a sharing economy is not without criticisms. Unlike businesses, unregulated individuals do not have to follow certain regulations and this can lead to poorer and inconsistent quality of goods and services and a higher risk of fraud, the increased opportunities to sell on our unwanted and underused goods can lead to a lesser impact on our environment.

Why can people sell things easier?

a.
Because businesses want to buy the things they don´t use.
b.
Because people nowadays buy more things.
c.
Because there are now online platforms where they can meet people who want to buy their goods and services.

 The first year of life

A newborn baby can see, hear and feel. By the age of five, a child can talk, ride a bike and invent imaginary friends. How does this development happen? We don´t understand the way language, thinking and planning develop very well. Now scientists are using new technology to ´see´ into children´s brains. A study in 2010 showed that the experiences a child has in their first few years affect the development of the brain. It showed that children who received more attention often had higher IQs. The brain of a newborn baby has nearly a hundred billion neurons. This is the same number as an adult´s brain. Researchers also know that babies need to hear a lot of language in order to understand grammar rules. But there is a big difference between listening to television, audiobooks or the internet, and interacting with people. A comparative study of two groups of nine-month-old American babies suggests that social experience is essential to successful brain development in babies.

According to the reading, Children´s brain development is highly influenced by:

a.
Their initial life experience.
b.
The food they eat.
c.
The place they are born.

How much TV do you watch lately? Is it more than the time you spend watching videos on the internet or listening to podcasts? Some may say TV is no longer making an impact on their lives but, is it really true? The TV is still a very popular way a lot of us get our entertainment at home. It offers us the chance to see top musical artists, great films and documentaries and sometimes, thanks to important life events, it has the power to bring the whole country and all ages together in a way the Internet never could. Some people argue that the TV offers a poor quality of programmers on the many channels we now have. It is certainly true that many of the channels do nothing more than repeat old shows or offer cheap, low-quality programmers. However, I would argue that a lot of content on the Internet isn't particularly great. At least TV shows have professional people checking the quality of shows, which a lot of content on the web doesn't. I agree that it is easy to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Internet, even though much of it is not true or certainly can't be trusted. I enjoy sitting down to the news on TV in the evening, knowing that I am more likely to believe the information than the things I read online. Anybody can post information on the Internet and a lot of it is opinion rather than fact. So I don't think we should be so quick to say goodbye to the TV. In fact, I think it has many more years left in it.

According to the reading, What does the author thinks about TV?

a.
TV is still a great form of entertainment
b.
How most people prefer videos online rather than the TV
c.
TV is no longer a way to comunicate or entertainment

TRAVEL IN THE US.

Most teenagers in the United States drive their own cars. In this country, drivers are required to obtain a license from their state of residence. Most states permit 15-year-olds to apply for their driver´s license, but they must attend a driver´s educational program at their schools or at a professional driving school. During the program, people must pass a full medical examination and an eye test in addition to a certain number of hours of driving practice. As soon as they finish the program, they must pass a written test and a driving test. The written test has 200 questions and it covers the applicants´ knowledge of traffic signs, traffic regulations, basic mechanics, and first aid. The driving test is generally taken in a special area where applicants have to drive through a series of difficult obstacles on the road. For immigrants, it is obligatory to speak English very well in order to enroll in the driver´s educational program. They must have a passport or birth certificate as ID. In some states, the legal status of the immigrant is not an issue. In others, it is the first requirement for applications. Finally, the cost of the test is around US$$200 but it varies from state to state.

According to the reading, is it possible to infer who can not get a car license in the USA?

a.
Immigrants

ASTEROIDS

In 2010, the planetary defense team at NASA had identified and logged 90% of the asteroids near Earth measuring 1km wide. These ´near-Earth objects, are the size of mountains and include anything within 50 million kilometers of Earth´s orbit. , NASA says none of the 887 it knows about are a significant danger to the planet. Now NASA is working towards logging some of the smaller asteroids, those measuring 140 meters wide or more. Of the 25,000 estimated asteroids of this size, so far about 8,000 have been logged, leaving 17,000 unaccounted for. Considering that a 19-meter asteroid that exploded above the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia in 2013 injured 1,200 people, these middle-sized asteroids would be a serious danger if they enter Earth´s orbit. Whether NASA can find the remaining middle-sized NEOs depends on getting the money to build NEOCam, a 0.5-meter space telescope that would use infrared light to locate asteroids. If it did get the money, it could probably achieve its goal in ten years. Once logged, the planetary defense team would still need to work out how to defend the planet against being hit by the truly worrying asteroids – the PHAs ´Potentially Hazardous Asteroids´ are rocks close enough to pass within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth´s orbit. NASA has created a map of 1,400 PHAs, none of which are expected to be a threat in the next hundred years.

According to the text answer the following questions:

What is the NASA reliance which is responsible for defending the planet from asteroids?

a.
Scientists in the city Chelyabinsk in Russia.
b.
The Near-Earth Object Camera (NEOCam).
c.
The Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

Today's grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations' online habits couldn't be more different. In the UK the over-55s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site's second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55–64 and 2.9 million over-65s. Sheila, aged 59, says, 'I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It's a much better way to see what they're doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Unlike her grandmother's generation, Chloe's age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has contacted old friends from school she hasn't heard from in forty years. 'We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,' she says. 'It's changed my social life completely.' Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as their parents were the early adopters of the smartphone. Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports that he used to be on his phone or laptop constantly. 'I was always connected, and I felt like I was always working,' he says. 'How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen myself?
